UMBRAGE

"Umbrage" (4-24-14 009v5) is another new pic, just fussed with yesterday. And, as usual these days it seems, I already have a couple other versions. I suspect that "Umbrage," though, is one of those pix that only its mother could love. My critical eye keeps yelling at me, while some other more compelling part just keeps murmuring "I like, I like..."

IN THE LIMELIGHT

"In the Limelight" (4-24-14 002v9) is very new shot, just worked on yesterday. It's also one of those I have several versions of already ... who gets fascinated easily? me?

SUN TOTEM

"Sun Totem" (4-24-14 008v2) was just taken yesterday and worked on this morning. Our memorial rose garden is simply "bustin' out all over." Seriously! In my six years here it's never been this exuberant. I thought I'd seen it all last year, but this year beats it, hands down. I hear, too, it's not just ours that's so verdant, other gardens are equally gorgeous. It makes one wonder (at least this "one") if the intense growth isn't somehow a response to the drought. Maybe nature making sure there's an overabundance of seeds so some are sure to survive?

WELLING UP; & Untitled

"Welling Up" (12-2-09 8422ev4) above, is from a very old photo and just messed with today. Not much to say about it. But at least I can offer the first version (below). It's clearly far less fussed with (just cropped, slightly color saturated, and the background cleaned up), and is as yet untitled (12-2-09ev2):

DRAWING IN BLACK & WHITE

"Drawing in Black & White" (4-21-14 003v6) is another made out of the same original pic I posted versions from yesterday. Viewing this one starts me yearning to draw again. It's been many, many years since I've sketched anything (long before I started taking pix). And my style was generally rather detailed (fussy some might say) as this photo is. Maybe I'll pick up a pencil or pen again some day. But I suspect I no longer have the kind of dexterity for it. I tried calligraphy a while back and as I'd feared my hand just wasn't steady enough anymore. Then again maybe I'm just making excuses for not taking a chance. Who knows? I could develop a different way of drawing, a more relaxed one even. However, none of this has anything to do with this photo. It puts me in mind of old etchings. A resemblance I tried to emphasize by increasing the contrast a bit (after using other sorts of filters as well).

SPRING SOUP; & MIX-UP

"Spring Soup" (4-21-14 003v7) was just taken and edited this morning. As I've said here many times before, I'm fascinated by fern patterns. I got stuck on the original pic from which I made "Spring Soup" above and have several other versions of it already. (Several in black and white in an attempt to emphasize the patterns.) Below is one called "Mix-up" (4-21-14 003v8):

SERPENT PEAK; & SPRING TREE

"Serpent Peak" (4-19-14 003v4) above, was tortured out of a very new photo yesterday. I had even more fun than usual doing so because I finally decided to try a Photoshop filter called liquify. I'd been using a combination of other functions that pretty much result in the same effect. However, I had long been wishing I could select sections for morphing, rather than have to accept the entire photo being effected in some way. Well, lo and behold, that's exactly what liquify allows, using only the one function, making the changes by mouse! Oh heavenly! I went on a liquify rampage. And I've only begun to play around with how I might apply it. I liked the shapes enough in this first result above to make "Spring Tree" (4-19-14 003v2), below, out of it by flipping it on its head and recoloring:
