LAVENDER BLUES and HIDDEN HEART

The above photo had been on my camera with some others for days before I finally worked on them last night. "Lavender Blues" was very hard to title as I see so many different things in it. And depending on what I see, the emotional tone changes entirely. But the colors seem to be the over-riding quality to me so I've stuck with those and the implied sadness ... that just might be lifting, like those leaves and the buds.

The original buds are a bright red, by the way. Here's one of them in another pic, "Hidden Heart":

Fully open now and in draping bunches, these little flowers are more a salmon pink. But I'm partial to "Lavender Blues."

YIN/YANG

"Yin/Yang" isn't a favorite of mine but I do enjoy it's contrasting textures. And the issue of balance has been even more up for careful attention in my life than usual. For example, yes, I fully acknowledge we need to balance and re-balance constantly. But how do we even attempt to hold in balance two such differing qualities as those shown in the picture ... without one damaging or occluding the other? Of course the (maybe not so) silly answer is: very carefully.

THE TIME BETWEEN

"The Time Between" was in my 7-24 exhibit. It's one of those photos I feel totally hopeless to assess "objectively." I'm completely seduced by the mood it generates for me. Along with some vague memory it releases that's so old I can't even catch it by the hem as it sprinkles me as if with fairy dust, then vanishes.

TOWER OF BABEL

"Tower of Babel" is one of those pix that I just couldn't scrap, yet could not find a way of editing that worked for me. I stumbled across it again this morning and think I can finally rest with this version. Believe it or not this color is only slightly heightened toward the blue. As I've said before here, these leaves tend to come up all sorts of interesting colors without my ever doing anything to them on my computer. When I first noticed this I looked much more closely at these leaves live under the various different types of lighting under which I come across them. And blues and lavender (especially) are there, sometimes strongly and other times vaguely. That last is something I continue to greatly enjoy about photograpy: it prompts me to take the time to look at things ever more closely and deeply.

BTW, I finally found out the name of these striped leaves and their flowers of which I take so many pictures: canna lilies.

THE TREE OF THE POSSIBLE

"The Tree of the Possible" -- from my 7-24 exhibit -- is clearly color manipulated. It had been on my computer for well over a year and half, awaiting my doing something to bring out what I feel when I look at that tree live. I tried cropping it, nine ways to Sunday, but nothing was effective. And there was the problem of a bright blue smoker's tent in the background that just created intrusive questions visually. But I'm nothing if not persistent and it finally hit me I had nothing to lose by playing around with colors. When I hit on purple with yellow the photo finally said what I feel when looking at the tree live.

I watched people's puzzled but engaged viewing of this pic on the wall of the exhibit. One man asked if I'd ever seen some famous artist's (can't recall the name) tree painting, so I gather it echos in a small way a well-known picture. I wouldn't be surprised if that painter were an impressionist, as to me this photo vaguely resembles that style (which happens to be my favorite period in art). I just now did an image google for "impressionist trees" and in just the few pages of thumb nail pix I viewed were several that my photo lightly echos.

LATE BLOOMER

I was bored this morning looking at the same old pix. Mostly because I've been through the thousands preparing for that exhibit I just had. So I thought I should try making some new versions from the category I have named "needs editing." "Late Bloomer" resulted after making a try with a few other pix there. It had been sitting in "needs editing" for much longer even than the push for the exhibit.

The title refers not only to the pic being of an old rose still unfolding new petals, but to how long it took for me to settle on a final version of the pic. (Not to mention a certain personal identification with that old rose.) I like how it almost looks like a painting. And I always love anything in or approaching the fuchsia color family.

WINTER CHILL

"Winter Chill" was not in my July 24th exhibit. (After this, I'll only mention my July 24th exhibit if a pic was in it.) There will ultimately be many pix on this blog of the shadows on and from stairs on the grounds where I live. They fascinate me, constantly changing in obvious and subtle ways. The light during various times of the day does wonderful things to the mazes of stairs here, especially on D-Building in which I live. For instance, I have one photo I'll eventually post called "After Escher." It's interesting that although I do not climb any of these stairs (knee and ankle arthritis), I still enjoy use of them as subjects for pix.
