JOSTLING FOR THE SUN

"Jostling for the Sun" is another version of one I posted here a couple days ago, flipped pretty much on its head, cropped, and slightly color saturated. I could wish for better focus, yet it looks almost like a painting. And the visual softness is compatible with the rose colors and the sunlit petals, I think. I'm not all that happy with the name but just couldn't think of anything else. Not that it doesn't fit the pic, only that it's a bit wordy. BTW, this particular group of climbing roses was even more gorgeous yesterday when I passed by. We may be in a drought but that one big rain storm we had in early March certainly has contributed to glorious spring blossoms.

EVEN SONG; & RIVERS OF NIGHT

"Even Song" (4-15-14 048v5) above, is a new photo just edited yesterday. And below is the same photo cropped way down and further fudged with, "Rivers of Night" (4-15-14 048v8):

As usual, I have other versions of both these pix. Someone once asked why I was taking a photo of a dying rose. These photos are why. The last petals of a rose about to fall from the vine are often evocative, and then when on my monitor their patterns can be endlessly intriguing.

CHECKING OUT THE SCENE

"Checking Out the Scene" is one of my newest pix, just fixed up ever so slightly this morning. I.e., cropping, intensifying the colors a wee bit (it was largely back lit and therefore paled out), and sharpening a little. It feels good to post a straightforward shot for a change. To have captured something of the beauty that often draws me to take photos to begin with.

BLOOD MOON RISING

"Blood Moon Rising" (4-12-14 003v10) is only days old and just massively messed with this morning. I've obviously been influenced by the recent full lunar eclipse (called a blood moon for the rusty color the various sunsets/rises around the globe cast onto it). I'd thought to go out on our top floor here to see what might be viewable even though I had no hope of getting a pic with my low end camera. But I got all caught up in other things that evening and forgot. However, I did get to see lots of spectacular photos of it the next day. So here's my abstracted (in both senses of that word :-D) version of that lunar eclipse.

MORNING WALK

"Morning Walk" (4-15-14 061v2) was just taken this morning and is a rare creature in my photograph universe. It's actually only been slightly cropped and color saturated, with one tiny bit of painting out of a distracting bit. This rose garden, especially given we're in a drought, is quite something this spring. I'd been hopeful when I snapped this one that it would be decent. I was shooting almost into the sun, not a tactic that bodes well for a photo. (In fact, that bit of painting out was over a rose that was so backlit as to glare whitish.) But between sheer luck, and remembering that the more area of a shot is filled with darker objects, the more bright light may be countered on auto settings, the results are passable. I also got lots of close up shots of that blooming Pride of Madeira (the bluish spikes in the back). But don't have time right now to work on those; they'll need lots of cropping due to the angles I had to take them at. I also have lots of other pix, taken in that too bright morning light that I may yet be able to reclaim in some fashion as straight forward pix. If not, they are already calling to my imagination to bring them up in Photoshop.

THE THAW; & BURNING BRIDGES

The Thaw (4-12-14 002v4), above, was taken just a few days ago and fudged with this morning. Once I got a passable crop of a hummingbird on her nest I'd been aiming for, I became enamored of the fern patterns in the rest of the picture. Below is another place these patterns took me, to Burning Bridges (4-12-14 002v7):

When I first decided to post these together I thought they were such opposites. And certainly at one level they are. Yet in another way (the titles reveal this) they both have to do with the effect of heat. I didn't consciously plan this, just followed my imagination's nose as usual.

LOVE BIRDS

Love Birds (4-6-14 009v5) was taken recently, and just edited a couple of days ago. The original source photo is yet another of those pix that has captured my on-going interest with its shapes and contrasts. I've already made several versions and posted a couple, with others still simmering on the back burner. In fact, yesterday's pic is a "realistic" version from a slightly different shot of the same flower.
