OUT OF THE FIRE

"Out of the Fire" (10-4-14 008v2e) was morphed several days ago from a very old photo. (During my on-going archiving/deleting project.) This is another of the many sorts of flora around here that I enjoy looking at. And when I manage to get a good shot of any of them, all to the better. I know it must seem odd to say that, given how much post processing I almost always do. I.e., can't I then deal with any problem that might come up by making it more artsy, even abstract? Well, that's a logical assumption, but it's not how it works out all to often. Sometimes you simply can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. That's not to say I think this pic is anywhere near being a silk purse. But it's OK enough for me to enjoy and to post.

ABSTRACTED EXPRESSION

"Abstracted Expression" (10-27-16 020v2b) is from a pic of the same tree as in yesterday's photo. Love these old eucalyptus's that line one portion of Embarcadero del Mar. There will be pix of their gorgeous gnarly above ground roots here eventually. But they are taking quite a bit of work to crop properly and paint out background distractions. In one, just as I snapped the shot, a car pulled up to the curb behind the tree. Ack! The pic has a car wheel leaping out at the viewer now. Not sure how I'll deal with that. Maybe it's time to learn some of the more sophisticated functions Photoshop offers. I seem to recall a series that enables eliminating sections of a pic. Hm...will see how energetic and adventurous I am.

BELLY BUTTON BRIGADE

"Belly Button Brigade" (10-27-16 019v2) was just fixed up from a pic I took yesterday. I've been at this computer working in that folder of 34 pix from my walk for some time now. And getting very frustrated. I'd actually decided on three other pix (one after the other) for this post today and changed my mind each time at the last minute. I can't seem to settle on anything as being even "good enough" (which is frequently my final criterion for posting). Then when a silly title occurred to me for this fourth pic I decided it's a relief not to take it all so seriously and so I'll go with the pic that inspired a laugh. I do like this pic, but (sigh, as often) the more I look at it, the more I want to pick at it in some way. So I'd better finish this posting right now ...

THE WITCH EMERGES

"The Witch Emerges" (3-27-10 8679v11a) was just morphed now from an old version of a very old pic. So it's very surprising it hasn't gone totally wonky on me. Then again, maybe it has and I just can't see it for all those fussy lines and swirls, and the mix of colors. And as I so often say here, now that's it's "cooled" a bit as I resized and posted it, I'm not quite as taken with it. Yeah, the novelty of a new pic tends to wears off rather quickly and expose its remaining problems. BTW, mostly I gave it the title I did because it puts me in mind of Halloween spooks flying around. However, I also see a very vague witch flying up/out in the upper left of the pic. Interesting, I just posted a pic to my dreams&poetry blog called "Ganesh Emerges From the Sea." What very different but powerful archetypes, if you will, to emerge on the same day.

SEEING RIGHT THROUGH

"Seeing Right Through" (10-20-16 020v2b) is from a very new pic, just fussed with this morning. Banana plants are another of the familiar and favorite flora I find around here (how's that for alliteration? :-D). I have a full color, unfudged with version of this crop. But in trying to fix a problem in it, I wound up following down an unexpected result to this version. Which I do kinda, sorta like. It's a bit Halloween-like ... maybe it's that suggestion of bones?

AFTERNOON OF THE CANNAS

"Afternoon of the Cannas" (5-12-10 10011v6) was just now morphed from a very old pic. I also have (as often) several other very different versions of this same pic. All just produced. Largely because I so like looking at canna leaves, even more than their flowers. The leaves haven't been anywhere near as lush in several years as they were in this old pic, given the drought. And I've missed that colorful profusion. As to this pic ... not so happy with it. But it's the best of the batch. And I've been working at this screen a bit too long, with a trail of pix that kept going wonky on me. Too much editing will do that. But often I can still rescue the pic by taking it in a slightly different direction. No such luck today. I can't post (well, I could but won't) my two faves because of their emerging wonkiness. Which even this one vaguely exhibits. :-(

RUFESCENT

What fun! I haven't posted a fuchsia colored pic in ages and I so like the color. I also had fun with the title, "Rufescent" (4-24-10 10011v11). Since I didn't want to use "fuchsia" yet another time in a pic name, I googled for synonyms. And up rufescent popped. A word I've never seen before. As a wannabe poet, I collect words so I was delighted to discover it. And it has the additional quality of echoing "ruffle," which this flower center is. BTW, it's accented on the middle syllable. And that was fun, too, to find out. As now that I have speakers, I can click on the icon for listening to a word being pronounced. But back to the pic: it's another one re-discovered (but quite some time ago and entered in my copious notes) during my archiving/deleting project. All I did to it this morning was diffuse and sharpen it. I've been wondering recently if I'm becoming way too fond of that combo of filters. Then again, maybe that's just my personal style. At least for the time being, until I go to the effort of learning some of the many, many functions Photoshop has to offer that I've not yet tried out.
