Presentation (above) was taken over three years ago in that favorite stand of cannas on our grounds. I went looking for canna pix as this is the time of year that this stand looks extremely ragged. No blooms, of course, and the few leaves are mostly tatty. I miss their colorful, graceful profusion.

As usual, I could not resist fooling with this picture. Below is Spill Off:

And next below is Bluebeard, from a different photo but the same batch:

I did try other colors than that lovely blue. None really worked, but then again, I will admit to being more than a bit partial to the blue (and purple) family of colors.

Just one more, from the same batch, and this is how I edited it those years ago. I.e., I've not touched it today except to clean up that over-sharpening effect. (I'd initially done it in a different program which made some of the edges of the curves look heavily doubled.) I've always sort of liked this "pointillist" look but rarely use it. The name is Points of View:

Sheltering Arms (above) is yet another over three year old photo and this is the version it's been in for all that time. However, as usual, I couldn't resist seeing what else I might come up with so here below is today's version, Painting By Night:

On the Path to Oz is now the ninth version of the same photo, from March of 2010. Hey, what can I say? It has very suggestive shapes and a delightful variety of colors with which to fool around.

I'm also becoming more and more aware of how important the relationship is for me between the picture and its title. In fact, more often than not if a title doesn't come along spontaneously that usually indicates there's something not right or not finished about the picture. I'm not suggesting this is true for anyone but me. And it was particularly true for today's photo because until the title occured to me I was very unsettled. I liked the re-working but it needed a name to be fully here.

For a change Heavy Weather is a new edit of a photo only three months old. Actually, I don't know why I keep commenting on how long I've had a photo sitting around before working on it. You'd think I'd had some sort of career in photography, going way back. I don't; I'm a newbie still by anyone's measure, especially in terms of my technology skills. Maybe I'm just acknowledging in an odd sort of way that tempus fugit, especially at this end of life. Even as I continue to try to make some sort of sense or order out of what has gone before.

Back to the photo: it's (what a surprise!) color inverted. Then I tried all sorts of other colors, even making the picture mono-toned. But I kept coming back to another favorite editing choice, the purple family. In my defense, I think it really does look best in these purples. They give it a sort of wintery gravitas that is still lovely to look at.

The original for Flash Flood is one of my earliest photos, taken in April of 2009. Today's edit felt especially rewarding. (That's not to say I think it's a great version, just that the process gave me something more than usual.) I've even posted another version of it today to my dreams & poetry blog. It's actually of the cross section of the stump of a cut down weeping willow. It was a sad day when I saw that, as the tree had been one of my favorites to pat gently when I passed it on my several-times-weekly walks to the ocean overlook, as I've always had a special affection for trees and especially weeping willows. The same tree stump also became the source for a series of metaphors in one of my (non-dream) poems about a painful ending.
