FERNTINNABULATION

Forgive the mashup title of "Ferntinnabulation" (4-21-15 006v2) but this particular fern kept ringing me like a bell with delight as it unfurled (still unfurls). There will be many more versions of other shots at different phases of this beauty's progress. Eventually, of course. Now that I'm snapping lots more pix on the longer walks I'm taking, I've a great many new pix of all sorts of things, waiting in the wings for possible posting. Not to mention all the old pix I've reclaimed during my on-going archiving/deleting project.

FLOWER FALL; & LEANING TO THE LIGHT

The source pic for "Flower Fall" (5-18-15 026v4) is from that batch of 50 pix I took a few days ago. (As is the other pic below.) As I fooled with various crops for this source pic I kept being drawn to the visual relationship between the lines of those palm fronds and the blossom beneath it. Ergo, I isolated them to (hopefully) bring that out. I also converted to black and white because it can sometimes very nicely emphasize contrasts. And all those curves, and lights and shadows seemed to cry out for emphasis. BTW, converting to black and white is not necessarily as simple as it may sound. There are various ways to accomplish it, each highlighting and de-emphasizing in different ways. And as is my usual wont, I then increased the contrast a little bit once I settled on a result I liked.

With both "Flower Fall" above, and "Leaning to the Light" (5-18-15 008v2) below, in addition to increasing contrast I decreased the midtones a bit. Which had the effect of further increasing contrast (without losing detail in the very light areas), and darkening the background some:

I also did a bit of "painting out" of distracting areas on both these pix. I so wish a mouse were more amenable to control. But at least today I had the patience to deal with a mouse's somewhat mulish behavior.

NIGHT OF THE PEACOCK

"Night of the Peacock" (5-18-15 016v8) is from that brand new batch of almost 50 pix taken a couple days ago. What I'm about to say is not a complaint, just an observation. But as I take longer walks, meaning a lot of new pix, my computer needs more than ever to be relieved of as many pix as I can possibly see my way to letting go of. Yet I have all these new pix, just making me itch to fuss with them ... and I do. So less archiving/deleting work gets done. Ah well, this is truly a minor problem. One I'm ultimately tickled to have.

LASTING IMPRESSION

"Lasting Impression" (5-18-15 044v4) was taken the day before yesterday. It was the last shot of almost 50. I haven't been able to take such a long photo walk in years. (Long for me, at least. And long in both time and distance.) F.Y.I., the source pic is of an agapanthus blossom that had been cut from its stem and dropped. As soon as I spotted it I got the itch to snap a pic with which I could fudge ... all those lovely lines and shapes. And there may be other versions of the original pic percolating.

PUTTING THE PIECES TOGETHER

The source photo for "Putting the Pieces Together" (8-26-10 10001v5) was found in my (it seems unending) archiving/deleting work and is almost five years old. I morphed this version of it a few days ago. Not much else to say about it except that I really like this combo of colors and textures. Oh, and the lines and curves ... and contrasts, too. Guess that means I pretty much like it as a whole, ey? BTW, this is one of those pix that looks better in a larger version. The details show up more. So, if you're interested, just click on the pic.

CALL OF THE FERNS

"Call of the Ferns" (9-13-10 10017v6) was worked on yesterday during my on-going archiving/deleting project, and just finished now for posting. It's one of those that appears somewhat different in all other programs than blogger. I did try adjusting a version only for posting here to get it to appear as I prefer it to. But that process (I actually tried two ways of doing that) effects other details I don't want changed. Sigh. So I have gone with how it looks here now. The difference from what I see in other programs? In those it shows a bit more solid black shadow in the background. And that makes the sort of reaching out fern branches "pop." Adding additional "depth" to the pic. Though given the delight I take in ferns leaves I do enjoy all the extra background detail that shows up here in blogger. A decent trade-off, I suppose.

LOOKING INTO THE ABYSS

The source photo for "Looking Into the Abyss" (8-5-09 4956v4) is one of the first pix I morphed during my still on-going archiving/deleting project, and is almost six years old. I'd looked at a few realistic pix for posting today but each needed cleaning up in some way. And I don't have the patience for that right now. I also sort of like the contrast this black and white, non-representational pic makes to yesterday's intensely colorful realism. I keep thinking of that expression "cleansing the palate."
