IN FOND MEMORY

Sad but true. This tree ("In Fond Memory" 1-15-11 10392e) just inside our front gate was cut down two days ago. I'd go into the story behind that (at least as far as I what I've heard and admittedly not from the mouths of those making that decision) but it's a lot to type. Not to mention it will simply make me all the more sad. I have other photos of it but it took me quite some time to ferret out this one, going back through dozens and dozens of folders. More importantly I still have the joy it gave me, year round. Even when it was dropping it's pesky large round seeds that made walking rather a challenge. (Especially once they'd get squashed by walker wheels and make the sidewalk slippery.) The space where it shared its quirky beauty and bounty now glares emptily and the exposed buildings seem out of place. But time will change all that. New things will grow there. And I am grateful I got to enjoy six years of this gracious old tree.

RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN' ...

The name of this photo (Raindrops Keep Fallin' 4-14-12 11688v3) is a bit of intense wishful thinking, given we're in a drought. Today is rather hazy but that's rarely an indication of rain. However, I'm putting this old pic (newly revised today) out into the larger universe with hope.

MEMORY'S WELL

This photo is called Memory's Well (3-14-14 025v3) and although a very new pic is already the second version of it I've made.

MOURNING

If Mourning (4-24-13 12598v8) looks vaguely familiar it's because I posted another version here not too long ago. This version reflects a vague feeling I've had for days. I've mentioned here before my younger brother's death at the end of 2013. My grief and other fall out no longer take center stage in my day, but are a shifting presence, like shadows among the stored scenery and curtains. (Warning, complaint ahead: the colors on this pic are not as I see them in any of my photo editing programs -- they're paler in this blogger view. And earlier I tried posting a totally different photo in which the background colors/details were so off from what I see in my programs that I simply could not leave it posted here.)

HIGH TEA; & SUNSHOWER

High Tea (3-2-14 011v2) above was taken right after one of the two big rainstorms we had at the beginning of this month. (Unfortunately, though it's certainly helped our gardens, we need many more such storms to end the drought. And none seem to be forthcoming.) I really like looking at new rose leaves in any weather, but with rain drops on them even more so. I find pix of them challenging to crop, however, given the wild tumble they're always in. And the odd distractions that wind up peeking out between and from behind leaves. But it's all part of the fun of "working on photos" as I tend to think of the process.

Here's another version of the same pic, Sunshower (3-2-14 011v3) below, that was obviously heavily fussed with (in both Photoshop and Microsoft Picture Manager):

CRAB NEBULA

Just took 57 (yes, you read that right, 57) new pix this morning and Crab Nebula 3-17-14 057v2) is the only one I like. Not to mention the last in the batch. Argh. No wonder it's a bit crabby, just like me now. Actually I think once I've spent a good amount of time with a few (a very few) of the others I may have some I won't be too hesitant to post. However, as mildly crabby as I may feel now after wandering disappointedly through all those new pix, I'm more feeling the afterglow of that beautiful day out there. And all the interesting things that grabbed my attention, clamoring to have their pictures taken. Then there's the fact my joints actually permitted a fair amount of walking and standing. All in all, a good start to St. Patrick's Day.

Ooops! Something to get a bit crabbier about ... that color difference that shows up occasionally between the blogger view and other ways I view a pic. In my editing programs the colors in this pic lean much more to the deep blue than to deep purple. Fortunately, I like this blogger "version" but it's not how I edited it.

SPRING CRUSH; & EN CHORALE

Spring Crush (3-14-14 005v2) above is a new photo just edited, but only a little bit (cropped and color saturated, and a little painting out of distractions). There are several batches of orchids in different colors and sizes blooming delightfully right now on our grounds. Like most of the flora here they are in locations either too far for me to hobble closer to, and/or in shade (at least the time of day when I see them), and/or surrounded by other distracting objects. (I've gotten pretty good at balancing as I use my walking stick with one hand to hold obscuring leaves and branches out of the way, and aim and snap my camera with the other.) But I keep trying to get decent shots of them. Mostly by taking them at a distance when I must, and then cropping the pics in many different ways to see what I can come up with. "Spring Crush" was a relatively simple one to produce. And as I just now looked at its larger source photo, I think there may be another way I can crop it as well.

En Chorale (3-14-14 006v2) below is of a different batch of orchids. I enjoyed fooling with the "texture" on this one. And look forward to trying other crops and even colors.
