SUN WORSHIP

"Sun Worship" (5-2-10 10011v8) is of one of my all time favorite pic subjects, canna leaves, and the source photo is almost 6 years old. This year's canna leaves are no where near as inviting as that year's were at the pre-blossom stage. (Probably due to a combo of the drought and lack of care.) But they're still lovely when the sun hits them a certain way. I look at them regularly from a chair on the second floor balcony of our library, that overlooks the pool and this canna stand. As to this pic, I fussed at it a bit, but mostly just a little cropping, diffusing, and sharpening. I then color adjusted it slightly to bring the green out a bit more. Almost always when I take pix of these leaves they come out much more thoroughly red than they actually are. That usually works for me, but for this pic I wanted the green, too. To balance those bright areas that are almost whited out by the sunlight. And re: those sort of whited out areas, I'm still uncertain about them. But not because I don't like the effect, I do. It's that critic in the back of my mind saying that anyone viewing this will see them as a mistake, a wannabe photog's lack of judgment. Ah, well, so be it. I like them in the over all setting of this pic.

FINDING SOLACE IN GREEN

"Finding Solace in Green" (4-21-16 010v2) is a brand new pic with relatively little done to it. Stag horn ferns always get my attention when they're growing. So I was delighted this pic came out decently. The backgrounds to our flora here tend to be rather messy and often there's little I'm willing to (or even can) do to clean them up in my pix. But with this pic I was able to "drop out" much of the considerable background schmutz by increasing the mid-tone contrast. Then what was left I was willing to paint out. As I've said before here, that can sometimes be a lengthy, painstaking process and only worth it when I really want to rescue a pic. And I did want to rescue these lovely shiny green shapes, very much.

SINGING THE BLUES

"Singing the Blues" (4-6-14 003v5) is an old version of an old pic, i.e., I didn't do anything at all to it today. Which is highly unusual given my propensity to fuss. It's exactly as I stumbled across it yesterday doing more of my archiving/deleting work. It's a simple song and I'm content with it as is.

THE CHOICE

"The Choice" (4-6-14 013v2) is an old version of an old photo that I just fixed up a wee bit yesterday during my ongoing archiving/deleting project. As always I'm coming across almost as many pix I want to work on as delete. And, of course, "work on" often involves making more versions. But overall I'm managing to maintain at about 12,000 pix. Whereas before I started this project many months ago, it was steadily creeping up, approaching 14,000. Back to today's pic: that's the memorial rose garden from which I've been posting new pix of blooms recently. It's finished a first round this season of spectacular roses and really needs pruning to come back in a great second round.

STRING THEORY

I just morphed "String Theory" (4-29-12 11821v9) this morning from an old version of an old pic. It's yet another of those I liked more when it first showed up on my screen. It's also one of those I don't seem to want to leave alone. I keep trying to "fix" it. So this posting has required untangling myself from a desire to keep fussing at it.

RETURN OF THE SUN

"Return of the Sun" (4-29-12 11816ev2c) was just morphed today from an old version (shall I even go on?) of an even older pic. I only kinda, sorta like it, having one big question about its visual balance. The colors grab me, though, being somewhat unusual for me to accept and not fudge with. Overall, before I stared at it and started picking, I found it pleasing. And I still do ... kinda, sorta.

GATHERING GLOOM

"Gathering Gloom" (5-25-09 1726v14d) was morphed this morning from an old version of a very old photo. It's mood and title most definitely do not reflect where I'm at. I just had fun following down the idea of gloom when I reversed the pic and the effects of the filter called plastic wrap became those fluttery, dark lines. They put me in mind of bats circling for a landing, as if magnetized by that yellow "promontory."
