MOTHER HEN

Continuing the trend of posting photos of my favorite colors, the lavender of "Mother Hen" comes in second only to purple. (See previous post for a very Purple Princess.) I also enjoy the tiny light blue centers of these little blossoms.

This is one of my earliest pictures and was taken with a loaner camera. Overall that older camera had better focus. But it had a smaller pixel capacity, so cropping in close would lose some of that focus, as can be noted in this photo. My newer camera has greater pixel capacity so that I can crop pretty much to my heart's content. However, it has a focus problem over all that the older camera did not. Ah well, what's any pursuit without some creative challenges and learning situations. E.g., it was partly blurry focus that led me to try more extensive computer manipulation. For in that blurriness I began to see shapes and shades I might not have noticed before, which then prompted me to emphasize and expand upon them.

"Mother Hen" is only very slightly color saturated to bring the colors closer to what I saw "live." It is also lightly sharpened in an attempt to improve the focus, though it didn't help a whole lot. And to sharpen more only makes the edges of shapes look odd. Along with a better camera, maybe some day I'll have a more sophisticated photo editing program. But if neither is ever the case I'm having great fun making-do with what I have.

NO GETTING PAST IT (Birthday Post)

"No Getting Past It" I'm getting older! The body much faster (at least so far) than the spirit and mind. :-) Today's my 68th birthday and I'm indulging myself with a photo that's my most favorite color. And when the sun back-lights their petals? Lucious lavender! My second favorite color.

"No Getting Past It" is the center of a Purple Princess bloom. I still find these blooms breathtaking even after living for four years in California. I can't recall ever seeing these flowers before moving here from New York city, though I suppose I must have seen them in photos. A birthday wish? That I never become inured to any of the various sorts of beauties I walk by every day.

MEMORY OF AUTUMN, AT THE WHIRLPOOL'S EDGE, & OSTRICH WALK

It's said that what you do at the changing of the year is what you will be doing all year long. Well, that's probably about the way it will go for me. I took the three photos posted here today -- and a whole lot more -- on December 31st and then edited them on January 1st. In a way, they can be seen to represent past, present, and future.

"Memory of Autumn" above is my personal favorite of those that have survived the first round of culling and editing of that considerable batch of pictures. It has a very nostalgic feel to it for me. It's clearly been heavily edited; the actual rose is a lovely solid coral-red but it just cried out for considerable lightening and "texturizing."

"At the Whirlpool's Edge" below is a close second to "Memory of Autumn." It draws my eye in and around, and therefore the name:

The third and last below, "Ostrich Walk," is a view I catch quite often. But it's the first time I happened by at just the right time to see that ostrich prancing up the wall. That's something I hope I'll be doing a lot of this year: laughing as I take photos.

By the way, since these three newbies posted today haven't "cooled" yet, they are vulnerable to change. But I'm sharing them anyway in the heat of new photo enthusiasm. And with that also comes my best wishes for a very HAPPY NEW YEAR!
