PRAYERS FOR RAIN

"Prayers for Rain" (7-28-09 4466v2g) was just morphed from one of my oldest pic morphs. (It's one of four I made this morning of the same original pic's heavily edited version.) I have mixed feelings about it. Or rather, I like it rather unreservedly (especially given my usual pickiness when it comes to my efforts). But I'm concerned with how much it resembles Native American Indian art -- specifically Eskimo art I remember seeing somewhere over the years. (And by years I mean decades. Because although I've only been doing photography for about 8-1/2 years, I've been drawing and painting since I could hold a pen or pencil or paint brush, and closely observing all sorts of art along the way.) I did not seek to imitate Indian art; it just popped on my screen as I was trying out different things in Photoshop. Of course, it may not resemble Indian art all that much; that may just be what I see in it. But it's still a question: am I stealing, or is imitation -- even unintended -- truly the sincerest form of flattery? All this put more simply: my fear of having my work called derivative runs deep and, worse, of it being seen to be disrespectful of another culture.

SUNSET THROUGH THE WILLOWS

"Sunset Through the Willows" (8-17-18 008v14) was just now finished (probably), further morphed out of a new pic I've been playing around with a lot the past few days. I have 14 versions of it now. Probably because it's of two of my favorite living things on this planet: a pair of willows I pass on my long walks. (One or the other of which I frequently sit beneath to rest or write or snap pix, or all of that. Well, not all at once, of course :-D.) It's also probable I'm just being more then usually picky. I keep finding little things I just can't leave alone in the versions of this photo I produce. Sometimes I want to bring them out or go in another direction based on them. More frequently, I want to eliminate or make them less distracting in some way. Today's version still has a couple of very small things I'd like to change. But I'm leaving it as is. I keep waiting for it to go totally wonky on me, given all the editing I've done of it. Yeah, I don't necessarily start fresh with the original pic in order to make a new version. Most often, I take off from an already edited version.
