NIGHT SINGER

The source photo for Night Singer (9-7-11) is old, but I just now produced this version. I've been fussing at the original picture since I took it two years ago but just couldn't get a crop I liked (lots of distracting background). I think this version comes closest to what I felt when looking at this massive (at least 2' wide) succulent (cactus?). Of course, if I'd been able to leave in some recognizable background to establish the size for the viewer, that would have been much better.

MANIC PENTACLE

The original for Manic Pentacle (10-30-09) is very old, but just fiddled with today. Clearly, I just dove into Photoshop and followed my nose. (I've been wondering if I shouldn't be capitalizing Photoshop as it's a brand name, but I'm not going back and correcting all my previous posts that have a lower case "p.") Given that most of what I've been doing with Photoshop recently feels repetitious I think I'm up against learning some totally new functions. I've been making do using the ones I'm already familiar with and just combining them differently, or learning to use their more sophisticated levels.

However, I've not been feeling very inspired photographically for a while. Though I've been having great fun working on my Tarot Gallery blog posting card meanings and images from various decks, which I've badly neglected for years. That blog also has a lot of my photos in which I've recognized something of the Tarot. That project's got my interest again, too. It's called "The Found Tarot" and what have been found so far are posted in Roswila's Tarot Gallery & Journal betwixt and between other sorts of Tarot posts, link in sidebar. It's a pretty good guess that I'll be posting new Found Tarot cards there soon.

HOLDING BACK THE NIGHT; & Untitled

Holding Back the Night" (9-23-13) above, is a new version of a new photo. Not really much I can say about it except that I really enjoy looking at the shadows and architectural patterns around the grounds of the retirement community I live in. And just when I think I've caught these buildings in about every light and from every angle, I discover some new shadows and perspectives.

This photo below is not titled (9-23-13). I'm just posting it to show where "Holding Back the Night" came from. The original for both of today's pictures, though, is much larger. I just cropped out the section that was most interesting to me.

AMARYLIS, & ICE FISHING

The original for Amarylis (2-19-10) is quite old, but just edited this morning. Another of those I'm not all that happy with. Actually I think I went too far. That is, went past what was actually a fairly decent version, but I'd already saved subsequent versions over it and I didn't feel like starting from scratch. However, this version does, at least for me in a vague way, call up the impact of red amaryllis blooms when they are fully open and sharing their fiery curves.

And just to be a pain in the butt I'm posting another version I made today of the same photo, Ice Fishing (2-19-10):

LONG PLAYING MEMORY

The original for Long Playing Memory (5-26-13) is a few months old, with this version just made today. I mostly played (pun intended) with an image it suggested that I just couldn't shake: gazing down on an old spinning vinyl record.

THE LIGHT WITHIN

The Light Within (9-11-13) is a new photo just edited today. I'm not over the moon about it, but as always the shapes and curves of leaves and branches call to me, also their delicacy. Even at a time of year when growth is mostly slowing and falling away, the light always coursing at the center of it all is still nearly visible.

FACING THE FUTURE

Facing the Future (8-25-13) is another of those self-portraits I worked on a few weeks back. I really like that line drawing effect and could not now, for the life of me, tell you what combination of photoshop filters ultimately produced it. Even as I posted those earlier self-portraits I felt as if I should somehow explain why I'd made them. I took them hoping to get a better picture for my blog bio, but why I then fussed with them remains in question. I've decided that beyond a sort of interest in how I look in pix and where I could go with that, it's rather a moot point to address. I.e., at least for me, there's a level at which all my artistic efforts (poetry, photos, etc.) are self-portraits. In that they are my perceptions and imaginings, and the work of my peculiar skill and talent sets, impacted by my medium of choice. How's that for an attempt at a non-defensive defense of my self-portraits? (:-D) Hey, at least I'm not too vain -- I'm posting a picture version that added an awful lot of wrinkles that aren't even here yet (though will be soon enough).
