AFTER HOURS

"After Hours" (10-24-14 001v2) is brand new. The only things done to it were a slight cropping and wee bit of straightening up. That red wood structure is the Corner Store on one edge of our retirement community's large B-Lounge space. I occasionally like sitting in the lounge when the light is like it is in this pic and have taken many shots over the years here, from many different viewpoints. Some posted to this blog.

AUTUMN UNFURLS

I say this rather often here, that something is one of my favorite subjects to photograph. Well, ditto re: these canna lilies. Especially this particular stand that's right next to our pool. Not only are the blooms lovely, but the leaves are particularly colorful. I'm not sure why, however, but recent years haven't been quite as lush. "Autumn Unfurls" (1-9-10 18891v2) is from several years ago when this stand was especially full. I've had this particular pic "on ice" so to speak all these years because I wasn't happy with certain aspects of it. When I came across it yesterday I saw that all it needed was re-cropping.

GRACING THE NIGHT; & HALLOWEEN TREE

"Gracing the Night" (10-15-14 010v6) above, is from my newest batch of pix. I've taken many of this tree's trunk and branches over the years I've been living here, as I so enjoy looking at their graceful curves. I have a color version (it's actually a day time shot) of this particular pic but the curving visual lines of the tree stand out better in black and white. There's lots I'm not happy with about this as a photo. However, those branches call to me, so I'm posting it anyway. "Halloween Tree" (10-15-14 010v3) below, is another version, in honor of the season (and I may like it more):

ONCE IN A BLUE MOON

"Once in a Blue Moon" (10-26-12 12222ev6) is from a slightly different shot of the same rose that's in yesterday's morphs. Those petals keep grabbing my eye and not letting go. Maybe I should just not keep opening it's folder. There are other pix in the folder, though, that also catch me. So I keep going back to it. Maybe I just don't want to risk the disappointment of trying to develop some of my new pix, and not succeeding. So I keep returning to my favorite "templates." In any case, beyond the color, the title of this pic reflects my sense of this particular rose: it's not often that I see such lovely fluted petals in our garden.

MOUNTAIN MAGIC; & CAULDRON OF FALL

"Mountain Magic" (10-26-12 12213ev8) above, was just today morphed out of an old, already heavily fudged with pic. As was "Cauldron of Fall" (10-26-12 12223ev18) below, from the same old photo:

And another new version of it made this morning, is with my post today to my dreams & poetry blog. I just noted that the original was taken at this time of year, which may explain why I've been drawn unconsciously to work on it.

WELCOMING HALLOWEEN

Continuing with the Halloween theme I started yesterday, here's "Welcoming Halloween" (10-15-14 001v2). It's of one section of our retirement community's Promenade. It's not a great photo, but at least it shows many of the seasonal decorations one can see along the way. I sometimes sit on a bench here after dinner and chat with a friend. But now that the weather's getting cooler (especially in the evenings) we won't be doing much of that until spring. It's a different story in the daytime, any season. Folks often sit here in the sun (or shade, as the need may be) and chat. (Both sides of the Promenade have benches and there's a gorgeous shade tree to the right of this pictured section.) Oh, and this pic? Very slightly color saturated, and it had to be cropped more than I would have liked. It was taken with my wide angle lens camera and some of the original is lightly skewed at the outer edges. I thought I'd compensated for that tendency with how I held my camera (that does work sometimes). It's really so hard for my aging eyes to see what something really looks like on the tiny view screens of these compact digital cameras. Not making excuses, just sharing. :-)

GHOST TREE; & DEM BONES, DEM BONES

"Ghost Tree" (10-8-11 11371v8) above, was just morphed today from a new crop of an old photo. It reflects the influence the approach of Halloween/Samhain is having on me. I'm even putting together a costume and will attend our community's party for the first time since 2008. (I've been observing the deeper significance of this time of year, though, consistently for many many years. In ancient Celtic tradition Samhain [said "SOWin") is New Year's.) In my daily photo work I find myself fudging photos rather unconsciously into suggestive, sort of spooky shapes. Then once those shapes are on my screen, I develop the Halloween theme with a will. I've been holding the resulting pix for possible posting closer to Halloween, but I've got so many now I thought I'd post a couple here today. Below is "Dem Bones, Dem Bones" (10-8-11 11371v6) from the same source pic:
