GIFT FROM A STAR

"Gift from a Star" (4-3-12 11532e) is an old photo, just very recently cleaned up. For such a little picture it required a bunch of "painting out" of distracting schmutz. But somehow I just wanted to rescue it if I could. Maybe because it's such a lovely yellow and that was my mother's favorite color. Maybe it's that almost star-shaped "platter" the calyx forms, as if it's offering up the little rose. Whatever reason, this photo has bugged me to clean it up and post it whenever I've happened upon it. Now, it's done. My critical eye is still not content, but whatever this little photo calls to in me is.

PLAY OF LIGHT; & LIGHT FALL

"Play of Light" (6-3-14 001v3) above, is a new photo, just cropped a wee bit and converted to black and white yesterday. It may look familiar as I've posted other shots of this view on our grounds. It's one of my many favorites around here; one of those that catches my eye, again and again. This time I'd hoped to capture the lovely pale blue color of those agapanthus at full bloom in the mid distance. But there was a bit too much bright sunlight on them. That, however, made for nice crisp contrasts in the pic overall when changed to black and white. However, the color version below, "Light Fall" (6-3-14 001v2) is fine, too, I think:

However, I lean towards the black and white.

DANCE FOR RAIN; & QUICK IMPRESSION

"Dance for Rain" (6-3-14 005) above, is (tahDAH!) a new photo. And below is another version "Quick Impression" (6-3-14 005v7):

A note on the watercolor effect in "Quick Impression." Although there are two different filters I've found in Photoshop about watercolor effects, I've yet to find they produce them when I've applied either of the filters. Whenever I do get the sort of effect in "Quick Impression" it's from applying filter after filter (none with watercolor in the name) and persisting til I get what I want. I tried writing down the series of filters once before that produced this effect. But found that they did not produce the same result in subsequent pix to which I applied the series. It seems each photo needs an individualized approach. Makes sense, since colors, shapes, intensities, contrasts, pixel count ... all are rarely (if ever) the same in my pix.

BTW, the day before yesterday I posted a different view from the same overpass between buildings where I live ("Afternoon Shadows").

MAGENTA MORNING

It would probably take less typing to simply note when a photo I post here is not from the same years old folder :-D. You know, the one "Magenta Morning" (9-13-10 10002e) is from and so many other recent posts. Anyway, I've never been happy with the angle from which I shot these roses. In my defense, that little bud between the two foremost open roses showed up much more "live" and I'd thought it would balance the arrangement. I finally settled with the effect of overall outlining in Photoshop as I so like the color of these roses. They've been difficult roses to photograph over the seasons, due to how tightly they grow in a bunch, and to the bush's placement in the garden. (There's only so much Photoshopping I'm willing to do on a realistic photo. Abstracts? Well, that's a completely different story.) But I do keep trying to get decent pix of them, and not only due to their delicious color. They were planted in memory of a woman I liked very much.

AFTERNOON SHADOWS

"Afternoon Shadows" (9-13-10 10114e) is from (can you guess?) that same old folder I've been in for days. I've liked this shot from the first time I saw it on my screen, years ago. But it just didn't quite make it to me for some obscure reason back then. I'm glad I came across it again during this time that I've been working quite a bit in black and white. Because having the thought to convert it to b&w to emphasize all those lovely shadows, has finally made it post worthy. BTW, this is from an overpass between two buildings of the retirement community I live in, that on one side looks out over the front gate entrance. I often sit there, and gaze at the distant mountains and draft poems ... and take pictures.

MANY CHAMBERS, ONE HEART

"Many Chambers, One Heart" (9-13-10 10104v8) is, yep, another from that same old folder. But at least not from one of a fern. Obviously, I did a great deal of fussing at this one in Photoshop. It was already greatly cropped down ages ago. Then I used (for the first time) the "stained glass" filter, and layered a few other filters over that, including color inversion. Then I changed the colors further in MS Picture Manager. I'm surprised it didn't go all wonky on me even half way through all that, due to it's low pixel count. Hey, it even survived being brought up to an approximate 480 X 640 resolution. Hm, just like our hearts survive a great deal, both literally and figuratively speaking.

GETTING HER DUCKS IN A ROW; & AND THE RAINS CAME

"Getting Her Ducks In A Row" (9-13-10 10050v4) above, is a new version of a pic from that same old folder filled with fern pix, that I've been working in recently. And below is another new rendering of that same old photo, "And The Rains Came":

I have to admit to taking a lot of pleasure in viewing "Getting Her Ducks In A Row." I wouldn't say it's totally unalloyed (I can always find something wrong), but it's much more positive than I've been feeling about almost any of my pix for some time.
