HEART OF THE FERNWOOD; & FERN FLARE

"Heart of the Fernwood" (9-13-10 10014v2), above, well, what can I say? It's freshly tortured this morning into the umpteenth version of a pic in that old folder I re-discovered a couple of days ago. I may be a bit more than usually attached to working with fern pix, as the fiddle head ferns around here are drying out due to the drought. A sad sight.

So, I'm sending up another "Fern Flare" (9-13-10 10017v8) from that same folder:

SPILLOVER

"Spillover" (9-13-10 10006v2) was just made yesterday from an old photo. It's in a folder that is rapidly becoming another of my "go to" folders for interesting things to play around with. In this case, I've always liked the original shot but couldn't figure out how to balance out that lovely large area of shadow on the upper right. I may still have not fully succeeded, but it pleases my quirky eye now even as I get a warm feeling.

WHO NEEDS COLOR?

"Who Needs Color?" (4-3-12 11530ev6) is from a very old photo and is (as I often say here) one of many versions from the same original pic. I had lots of fun this morning making this particular version. I originally wanted to post a realistic yellow rose in memory of my mother (whom I've been thinking a great deal about recently), but I think I may have about had it for today with seriousness and heavy emotions. As once I started looking at pix I found I just wanted to fool around and see what would happen. I've also been working a bit more recently in black and white. So, "Who Needs Color?" resulted. (If you'd like to see a very different sort of black & white photo of mine, click here.)

MOONGLOW; & AROMATIC

"Moonglow" (4-3-12 11531ev4) above, is from a very old photo that I just cropped a wee bit this morning. I was surprised to find no record of having posted it here before as I do like it. However, my record keeping was rather spotty when I switched to my new computer a year ago. And if this is a re-posting, so be it. I'm enjoying looking at it with fresh eyes.

The photo below, "Aromatic" (4-3-12 11531ev8) , was just re-worked from "Moonglow" this morning:

MOON DOG

"Moon Dog" (6-2-14 016v5) was tortured out of a new photo late yesterday afternoon. In fact, the pic I posted here yesterday called "Light Construction." I've also posted another version of it to my dreams & poetry blog (click here if you're curious).

SIFTING THE LIGHT; & LIGHT CONSTRUCTION

OK, so why do shadow patterns I stumble across fascinate me? Dunnoh! They just do. This pic, taken on my morning walk today, is called "Sifting the Light" (6-2-14 016v2). Funny thing is I took a bunch of other pix before this, then sat for a while reading. When I got up I almost passed on this shot, thinking the combination of bright sun on white, grey shadows, and even deeper darkness would not work out. But at the last second I turned back and took two shots. One turned out just as I'd expected, N.G. The white wall glared. But this one worked fairly well with some cropping (and nothing else). As to the other pix? A quick perusal says today's pic may be the only "successful" one (i.e., not asking for or needing a Photoshop make over) in today's batch. Odd, but I find these last throwaway shots often turn out to be the best of the litter. At least as straightforward, un-Photoshopped pix.

And since I can never leave anything well enough alone, here's another more heavily cropped version below, "Light Construction" (6-2-14 016v3):

I'd say I like both versions equally. The first for its realism (something I wander from more and more these days), and the second for how it begins to approach the non-representational. (And I have to admit that the intersection of stag horn leaves, wall, and straight line shadows is already tempting me to bring the pic up in Photoshop and see what I can do with it all.)

ALL SHOOK UP

"All Shook Up" (4-19-14 005vd) is among many versions I've made from the same original pic. I just posted three others here on May 28th and there are still more I might put up here in the future. I so enjoy exploring how the "feel" of certain pics with intriguing shapes and contrasts can be altered. It's also fun never really knowing what a filter will do to a photo until the result actually pops up on my screen. I may have an idea of what a filter does in general, but can't really anticipate it's full effect on a particular picture. Or where that effect might next lead me.
